Course Description
This six-hour, intermediate course is based on the second edition of ASHRAE’s HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics and ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2017, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities. Experienced mechanical engineers are introduced to the unique requirements of healthcare HVAC design and operation. Because engineers are regularly asked to troubleshoot systems they have designed, operation and maintenance issues are covered. The course details the key elements of healthcare HVAC systems including infection control, comfort, reliability, safety, maintenance, energy, and flexibility. The methods by which the HVAC system can mitigate or exacerbate airborne infections is covered, as this is the purpose of ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170. Numerous energy conservation strategies are discussed in the context of achieving the goals of a high-performing hospital. Energy conservation strategies are discussed in the context of all the performance criteria. For example, such goals include determining the hardware and controls for setback of temperature and airflow and their relationship to temperature, relative humidity, air exchange, filtration, and pressurization requirements. Tuning of controls (RCx) and building automation system (BAS) dashboards are covered. Further topics include designing and operating air handlers, distribution, life safety, smoke and fire dampers, compartments, and controls. Operational issues and their effect on the design of central utility plants for healthcare facilities are described. This course covers assessing existing HVAC systems and the complexities of designing renovations in operating hospitals for concerns such as phasing, utility shutdowns, and infection control risk mitigation. Two hours of this class focus on designing operating suites, isolation rooms, labs, pharmacies, sterile processing, and imaging suites.

Cancellations received between three and seven working days before the course date are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. Registrants who do not attend a course or cancel less than three working days before the course date are liable for the entire course registration fee.
